"Gilliam County Pioneer Passes"

   John Berthold, a pioneer of Eastern Oregon, died at his home on Shutler Flat, Gilliam County, November 27. He was 70 years old. Mr. Berthold was born in Lee County, Iowa, December 25, 1846. He crossed the plains with his parents when 2 years of age and lived for a time with them near Corvallis. In 1887 he located in Eastern Oregon, where he became the owner of an 1800-acre wheat farm.
