He was also employed at Goodwill Industries, Walla Walla. Mr. McKenzie moved to Tacoma in 1978 to be near his son, Jack McKenzie. Survivors include his son, Jack of Tacoma; a sister, Irene Barnes of Milton-Freewater; two brothers Irvan McKenzie of Hermiston and Thomas McKenzie of Walla Walla; and two grandchildren. His death was due to paralysis. He was born in London, Laurel county, Kentucky. February 28, 1839. his marriage to Miss. Alabama Gray took place December 21, 1865. His widow survives him. They were the parents of five children, two of whom are living. They are Miss. Daisy Frasher and Charles Frasher of the city. Six grand children and nine great grand children survive also. He was born Sept. 2, 1903 in Ione, the son of Johan Troedson and Thilda Nelson pioneer Ione area ranchers. He was a member of Valby Lutheran Church, Ione Pomona and Willows granges. He was secretary-treasurer of the Ione-Lexington cemetery board. He is survived by one brother, Verner Troedson of Pendleton, and a sister, Linea Nottage of Portland. Services will be Wednesday. Renn of Walla Walla, a resident here for almost 50 years, died at the Odd Fellows Home this week after a long illness. She was 82. Miss. Renn was once a resident of Pendleton. Born, March 2, 1880, at Silverton Ore., she was the daughter of B.F. and Theresa Renn. The family moved in 1887 to Pendleton, where Miss. Renn later worked for many years for the Hartman Abstract Co. She came to Walla Walla in 1914 to take care of her mother after her father’s death. In 1932, Miss. Renn accepted a position as children’s governess at the Odd Fellows Home here. She served in many capacities at the home until her retirement due to ill health in 1952, after which she stayed at the home as a member. Miss. Renn was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Pythian Sisters. She is survived by a sister, Dora Christiansen of Pomeroy, and several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. J.B. He died in 1940. She had been in ill health for several years. She was a member of the First Christian Church. Shull GOLDENDALE, Wash.- Eula Evangeline Shull, 87, died Friday, Sept. 20, 1985, at Goldendale, Wash. The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, at the Knosher-Erdman Funeral Home in Goldendale, followed by burial at the Centerville Cemetery. She was born Oct. 12, 1897, in Wakefield, Kan., to Frank and Lorinda (Jackson) Draper. Her mother died when Eula was 18 months old, and she was raised by foster parents, Josh and Nellie Parrack. On Jan. 23, 1918, she married John N. Shull at Wakefield, Kan. The couple farmed in Kansas and Colorado before coming in 1940 to Goldendale, where they operated a dairy farm with their son, Ray. Later they purchased the John Deere Implement Co., and operated it for several years. They also ran ranches in the Springcreek, Centerville, and Goldendale areas. In 1970, they retired and moved to Goldendale because of her husband’s failing health. He died in 1973. While living in Centerville, Bula was active in the Centerville Grange and the Thimble Club. She also worked as a Avon representative for several years. Survivors include a daughter, Althea Watts of Hermiston; three sons: Ray of Goldendale, Darold of Spokane, and John C. of Hermiston; four sisters; Zola Headman of Tulsa Okla., Blanche Lillienthal of Albany, N.Y., Emma Walno of Loveland Colo., and Elsie Sargent of Oldsberg, Kan.; 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Reeves, Florence The East Oregonian November 17, 1979 Florence Reeves Umatilla – Florence Rachel Reeves, a Umatilla resident for more than 50 years died Friday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Walla Walla, Wash. She was 77. Mrs. Reeves was born Dec. 23, 1901 in Everest, Kan. She was a member of Pocahontas Lodge of Umatilla, and also helped with Senior Citizen dinners. Surviving are her sons, Harold E of Santa Barbara, Calif;, and Bennie B.; Irrigon; Daughters, Dottie F. Stephens and Norma V. The Milton Eagle Thursday, February 19, 1931 Francis M. Fry Francis Marvin Fry passed away Thursday, February 12, at the home of his sister, Mrs. F.D. Hutton, on river road east of town. He had arrived for a visit at the Hutton home only about twenty-four hours before from Sunnyside Wash., but had been ailing for some time. Mr. Fry was born in Illinois, April 17, 1855, and was 76 years if age. He is survived by his wife and two sons. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Christian Church, Rev. Sample After a residence in this vicinity extending over a period of sixty years, practically his entire life. Francis M. Sample passed away last Friday at the home of his son, Leonard Sample, in Milton, aged 64 years. Mr. Sample was born on a farm near Walla Walla November 4, 1868, and moved to the Oregon side of the line early in life, residing in the valley all his life. While he had not been in the best of health for the past year or two, he was able to be about and attend to his customary duties up to within a few days of his passing. His last illness lasted but two days and heart trouble was given as the immediate cause of death. He is survived by a son, Leonard Sample, and a daughter, Mrs. John Daugherty. Three other girls suffered injuries. The party was on the way to Pendleton to attend a show. It is believed that Mr. Clayton was blinded by the lights of a passing car, causing him to lose control. Mrs. Powers had lived in Pendleton from 1948 to1961, then moving to Milton-Freewater. She was born Dec. 26, 1898 in Burlingame, Kan. On Dec. 26, 1917, she married George A. Powers in Ottawa, Kan. For many years she worked at Harris Pine Mills in Pendleton, and also worked several years at the Eastern Oregon Hospital and Training Center. Her husband died in 1968. Mrs. Powers was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Surviving are three daughters: Wilma Stiles of Pendleton, Mildred Helton, of Roseburg, and Bernice Hall of Moundville, Mo.; son Marlin Powers, Pendleton; sisters Emily Bracken, Mt. Kash Kash, Julia H. The East Oregonian June 10, 1958 Julia H. Kash Kash Dies Funeral service for Julia H. Kash Kash, 94, who died Tuesday at St. Anthony’s Hospital, will be Friday. Mrs. Kash Kash was born at Kamiah, Idaho and had resided in Umatilla County for 50 years. She was the daughter of the first minister ordained from the Nez Perce tribe at Lapwai, Idaho, the Rev. Robert Williams. Her family was the first generation of Christians from the Nez Perce tribe, according to Dr. J.M. Cornelison, Pendleton. Dr. Cornelison said Mr. Williams, the Rev. Deffenbaugh and the Rev. William Wheeler, by order of the old IdahoPresbytery, organized the Umatilla Church, now known as the Tutuilla Church, June 16, 1882. Dr. Cornelison said this was three years before the Presbyterian Church was organized on Pendleton. Mrs. Kash Kash was the first president of the Tutuilla Women’s missionary Society and was active in church work all her lifetime. Sample, Leonard The East Oregonian Friday, June 13, 1952 Funeral Rites Held For Leonard Sample Leonard Sample, a native of Milton-Freewater, died Saturday afternoon, June 7, in a Walla Walla hospital following a long illness. He was 55 years old. Sample was born in Milton August 7, 1896, and had lived here most of his life. He had been employed by the city of Milton for 25 years, most of that time as distribution Superintendent and line foreman. He was also chief of the fire department for 12 years. Whitely of Adams, mention of whose illness was recently made in The Press, died in a Walla Walla hospital Thursday of last week. Death followed an operation for relief from appendicitis. Nolf A pioneer of the city, died Sunday at 11 o’clock after a brief illness with complications following enlargement of the liver with which she was attacked six weeks ago. Mrs. Nolf was 65 years 11 months and 7 days old at the time of her death and leaves a husband, J.H. Nolf and six living children, all of whom will attend the funeral tomorrow. The children now living are as follows: John, Fred, Joseph, and Edward Nolf and Mrs. J.H. Moore and Miss. Emma Nolf. Fred had just left here for Seattle and came back Saturday evening to be at the beside of his mother, and Mrs. Moore, who resides in Spokane is expected to arrive in time to attend the funeral. Three children of the family have died. She was married to J.H. Nolf in Allentown, Pa., in 1863 and after residing there for a number of years, came to Nebraska, where they lived for a short time, coming to Pendleton in 1889, where they have since resided. Joe Nolf well known in this city, where he passed the greater portion of his life, died Saturday in Seattle from the effects of cerebo-spinal Meningitis, and he was buried this afternoon in Olney cemetery. The news of his brother’s sudden death was received here Saturday evening by Ed Nolf, of the Alexander grocery store. Last evening the body of the dead man was brought to the city on train no. 2, accompanied by the father, John H. Nolf. At 4 o’clock this afternoon the funeral service was held from the Rader undertaking parlor, the service being conducted bt Rev. W.L. VanNuys. Shull, Opal Marie The East Oregonian November 7, 1989 Opal Marie Shull HERMISTON- The funeral Opal Marie Shull were today at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hermiston, with burial following at Hermiston Cemetery. Mrs. Shull, 65, Hermiston, died at Emanuel Hospital in Portland on Friday, Nov. 3, 1989. She was born at Davis, Okla., on Feb. 24, 1924. She was reared and attended school at Oklahoma City. Prior ro her marriage she worked in a photography store in Oklahoma City. On Aug. 4, 1945, she married John C. Shull in Oklahoma City. The couple lived at Jacksonville, Fla. For a time and returned to Oklahoma City where three of her children were born. The family moved to Goldendale, Wash., and in 1955 moved to Hermiston. Mr. Shull retired as Hermiston Fire Chief in 1988. Mrs. Shull was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church; Order of the Eastern Star; past guardian of Bethel 44 Job’s Daughters; Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary; was a past 4-H ; leader; was a member of the Women’s Civic League, and Episcopal Women. She had worked at Burnham’s Department Store in Hermiston, where she was ladies clothes buyer, and also Williams Clothing Store for many years. Mrs. Shull was known among friends for her love of people and the joy she took in successes of her family and friends. Survivors include her husband at home; sons, Jim of Nampa, Idaho, and John of Scappoose; daughters, Rita Harris of Hermiston, Laura Siler of Murrieta, Calif., Althea Shull of Hermiston; and seven grandchildren. Mr. Tucker was born March 14, 1912, in Weyburn, Sascatchewan, Canada, to Claude and Margaret Sindt Tucker. He moved to the United States in a covered wagon with his family when he was 2 years old. He attended schools in Montana. and Minnesota. For the next 38 years Mr. Tucker worked for the Great Northern Railroad. He married Viola Warnock in Umapine on March 16, 1968. The couple lived in Hermiston from 1968 to 1972 where Mr. Tucker worked as a custodian at the Good Shepherd Hospital. In 1972 they moved to Waitsburg where he did construction work. They then moved to Lakeview, Ore., where he was supervisor of maintenance for the school district there. The Tuckers came to Milton-Freewater in 1975. Mr. Tucker is survived by his wife at the home, a son Thomas Tucker of Frenchtown, Mont.; a daughter, Marcene Tucker; his mother, Margaret Surring of Detriot Lakes, Minn.; a sister Beatrice Sharp of Detroit Lakes; three brothers, Vernon Tucker of Minneapolis, Minn., Louis Tucker of Woodward Okla., and Melvin Tucker of Jefferson, Wis., and four grandchildren. Mr. Lewis married Marilyn Lamm in Weston, Ore., Sept. 25, 1958. His various truck driving jobs allowed him the opportunity of traveling, which he enjoyed. He drove for Ready Mix Sand and Gravel in Milton-Freewater for 11 years, retiring in 1984 due to ill health. Mr. Lewis was a member of the First Baptist Church, Milton-Freewater. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the Army. Morse, Richard Scott Russell The East Oregonian October 3, 1972 Hermiston Man Charged With Child’s Murder A Hermiston man, Dennis Bryan Morse, 22, has been charged with murder in the death of his stepson. Morse is being held in the Umatilla County Jail at Pendleton. The child, Richard Scott Russell Morse, 13 months, died at 7 p.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Hospital in Hermiston as a result of injuries from a blow to the head, said Sheriff Robert Oliver. Morse was arrested Monday. Morse, Rt 1, Box 518, Hermiston, lists his occupation as laborer. He is a native of Pendleton. Morse weighs 180 pounds and is five feet 11 inches in height. Morse and his wife, Marla Kay, have been married only a short time. Troedson PENDLETON- Memorial services for Verner Eugene Troedson will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 241 S.E. Second, in Pendleton. Mr. Troedson, who celebrated his 90th birthday on Thursday, June 12, 1997, died less than a week later on Wednesday, June 18, 1997, at his home in Pendleton. He was born at the family ranch at Ella, near Ione, in 1907, to Thilda and Johan Troedson, Swedish immigrants. He attended the local school through the eighth grade when he started farming. During the Depression in the 1930’s, he purchased his own ranch in the Ione area and devoted the next 40 years to farming. On March 24, 1948, he married Margaret Brewster McGreer, who along with 12 year old daughter, Shirlee, joined Mr. Troedson on his ranch. The Troedsons retired in 1971 and sold the ranch to Eric and Marnie Anderson. In addition to farming, Mr. Troedson enjoyed the stock market, most sports, especially baseball, football, and boxing, and the Pendleton Round-Up, which he attended over 60 times. He also liked to travel and had made many trips to Sweden to visit relatives and, in 1960, participated in a People to People farming tour of Eastern Europe. He was a member of the Wheat League, the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, and had been a member of the Heppner Elks Lodge for 67 years. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, and daughter, Shirlee, both of Pendleton. He was preceded in death by brothers, Carl and Francis, and sister, Linea. Harris Dies At Hermiston HERMISTON, August 20,-- George Harris, old time resident of Hermiston passed away early Saturday morning at Hermiston General Hospital. His death was unexpected, though he had been ill the greater part of the past two years, but the previous evening was in good spirits. Employed for five years previous to illness with the Inland Co-operative, he was well known to the many patrons. He had four sons in the service during the past war, Robert, William, Wayne, and George Jr., and also a son-in-law. Besides the widow there remain three younger sons and two daughters. McDonald, John The East Oregonian Saturday, November 21, 1903 JOHN M’DONALD DEAD Union County Pioneer Drops Dead While in Apparent Good Health Alicel, Nov. 21—John McDonald, one of the earliest pioneers of Union county, dropped dead at noon Friday, while feeding his horses, shortly after eating a hearty dinner. His health had been remarkably good and he was in the best of spirits at the dinner table, going to the barn immediately after the meal, where he was found by his son, lying on his face on the floor, dead, a few minutes later. Mr. McDonald was a native of Scotland, and came from Iowa to Grande Ronde valley in 1863. He leaves a family of seven children, all grown. He was county commissioner of Union county for two years and was a quiet, energetic, successful man, with a host of friends. He had just pasted his 83rd birthday. He was one of a large Scotch settlement which came into Grand Ronde valley in the early 60’s, among whom are the McKenzies, Shaws, McLeans, Morrisons, McDonalds, Olivers and Standleys. Mrs. Kaiser, 83, a longtime resident of Pilot Rock and this area, died Tuesday in Pendleton, at Delamarter Care Center. She was born in Woodstock Ohio, June 28, 1900, the daughter of John and Emma Hoisington. Her father served with the Union Forces during the Civil War. When she was 15 years old, she came to Oregon. She was graduated from high school at Hermiston, where her family farmed. Her father had died earlier. On Oct. 18, 1940, she married Karl F. Kaiser at Camas Wash. They lived in Pendleton, moving to Pilot Rock in 1952. Mrs. Kaiser was a member of the Emblem Club of Pendleton. The East Oregonian December 15, 1987 PENDLETON- Karl Fritz Kaiser, 78, of Pendleton, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1987, at Amber Valley Care Center. When he was 21 he came to the United States and to Pendleton. His uncle, John Hanke, owner of the Hanke Bakery in Pendleton for many years, was his sponsor. Kaiser became An American Citizen five years after arriving in the country. He worked with his uncle in his bakery and also worked for Safeway as a baker until his retirement at age 63. He served in the Navy during World War II as a baker on the islands of the Pacific Ocean. In 1949, he married June Spinning. She died in 1983. Kaiser was a lifetime member of the Pendleton Elks Lodge No. 288 and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Pilot Rock. She was born Oct. 7, 1897, at Soldier, Idaho, to John and Lydia Ballard Wardrop. She grew up there, attended local schools and worked on the family farm and in her parents’ hotel. On Jan. 26, 1922, she married Claude E. Wallan at Gooding, Idaho. After their marriage, the couple continued to farm on their homestead in Camas County, Idaho. Mrs. Wallan also worked in Restaurants and for the phone company. During harvest, she worked at Milton-Freewater, then returned to Fairfield in the Winter. The Wallans moved to Milton-Freewater in 1953 and she worked for Birdseye, Rogers Walla Walla Cannery, Utah Cannery, and area packing houses.\ She enjoyed making rugs, gardening, canning, and collecting spoons. Many people called her “Grandmother” whether or not they were related. A year after her retirement, she traveled to Germany to stay with her son, and toured Europe. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Milton-Freewater and the Occident Rebekah Lodge of Fairfield, Idaho. Hug, 65, long-time Boardman farmer, died of a heart attack Saturday morning while he was trying to free his four-wheel drive vehicle from snow. He and Mrs. Hug had spent Friday night at their cabin near Meacham and were trying to get when the attack took place. Mrs. Hug walked out to the main highway and got a ride with a passing motorist into Meacham. Mr. Hug was born July 11, 1904 at Summerville. He married Erin Bickford at La Grande in 1927, and the couple lived in Union County and in Forks, Wash. before moving to Boardman in 1933. Survivors besides the widow, are a son, Delmer of Boardman; two daughters, Mrs. Don (Wilma) Wirt, Mt. Martin, 82, died at Good Shepard Hospital Saturday. Mr. Martin was born in Missouri August 31, 1894. Mr. Martin had been a resident of Hermiston the past 27 years, and formerly had lived in LaGrande. Wallan of Los Angeles, formerly of Adams and Pendleton, will be at Folsom-Bishop Funeral Chapel. Mr. Wallan, 55, died Sunday at a Long Beach, Calif., Hospital. He was born at Adams April 17, 1921. He graduated from Adams High School. He attended the University of Oregon and was a Happy Canyon Director from 1953 to 1958. He was in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Wallan had been working as a project manager in building construction. He was a member of Pendleton Elks Lodge 288. Survivors are the widow, Jan; mother, Dora Wallan, Adams; son, Michael, Portland; daughter, Mary Trevor, Los Angeles; and foster uncle, Jasper Hodge, Adams. Interment will be at the Weston Cemetery, Weston. Contributions may be made to the Oregon Heart Association or a charity of choice.
