Maude Barnes June 13, 1902; Oregonian, p 4 Baker City, June 12 Miss Maude Barnes, a teacher in the public schools, died at her home in this city yesterday from the effects of a dose of chloroform, administered by the attending physician for the purpose of performing a surgical operation. She had suffered with rheumatism for some time, until one of her knees became stiff. The doctors decided that an operation was necessary in order to prevent the knee joint from becoming permanently stiff. The chloroform was administered in the usual manner, but she died suddenly while under the influence of the drug. Miss Barnes was 19 years of age. She had taught two terms in the public schools of this county. She was a graduate of the Normal School at Monmouth.
