J. W. Mead Dec. 27, 1899; Oregonian, p 6 Baker City, Dec. 26 J. W. Mead, cashier of the First bank of Sumpter, died of pneumonia at the hospital at Baker City, Sunday morning. He was taken sick Wednesday evening, and Saturday was removed to the hospital. He was about 40 years old, and unmarried. His mother lives at West Liberty, Ia., where the body will probably be sent for burial. Mr. Mead was for a long time in the railroad service, having been the first agent at La Grande, where he came from Iowa in 1889. He removed to Sumpter in October of this year in connection with the bank, of which he was also a director.
