Max Weil Dec. 4, 1917; Oregonian, p 9 "Baker Pioneer Passes" Baker, Or., Dec. 3 Max Weil, one of Baker's oldest and most prominent merchants, died here this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, after an illness of several months from paralysis. Mr. Weil has been in Baker 30 years, and founded the firm of M. Weil & co., one of the oldest in Baker, in 1887. He was born at Haigerlock, Wurtemberg, Germany, December 19, 1848. He came to the United States on a sailing vessel in 1864 and settled in Kentucky, later coming west by way of Panama, landing at San Francisco. He then came North and located in Stevens County, Washington, where he served as County Treasurer for two terms. He married Miss Henrietta Dilsheimer in Baker in 1885 and Mr. and Mrs. Weil came to Baker to reside in 1887. He has been actively identified with the growth of the community and his death marks the passing of another Baker County pioneer. Mr. Weil was a member of Baker Lodge No. 147, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; Baker Lodge No. 338, of Elks; Camp No. 48, Woodmen of the World, and of the Ancient Order United Workmen Lodge No. 100. He is survived by his widow, a son, Edgar Weil, now living in California, and a daughter, Miss Hortense Weil. The body of Max Weil, of Baker, who died there yesterday, will be brought to Portland for interment. Funeral services will be held at the Holman undertaking establishment tomorrow afternoon at 1:30. The body will be cremated and services at the Crematorium will be private.
