Mary Ann Hayden Jan. 7, 1913; Oregonian, p 13 "Woman Pioneer, 86, Dies" Alsea, Or., Jan. 6 Mrs. Mary Ann Hayden, aged 86 years, nine months and 26 days, died at the home of her son, Marion Hayden, near Alsea, December 28, of senility. She leaves eight children, 20 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hayden was born in Woodroof County, Kan., February 28, 1826. She moved with her parents to Missouri and in 1843 was married to Thomas Hayden. In 1853 they crossed the plains with an ox team, to Oregon over the Meeker route. They settled near Albany and soon afterward moved to the Alsea Valley in Benton County, where she resided until her death. Twelve children were born, eight of whom are still living. One son, Marion Hayden; Mrs. Silad Howell, of Yahatts; Mrs. Lizzie Mason and Mrs. Martha Slate, of Alsea; Mrs. Ed Rider and Mrs. W. W. Rider, of Corvallis; Mrs. T. J. Risley, of Albany, and Mrs. Ed Benton, of Seattle. Her husband died in 1893. "Grandma" Hayden was familiarly known throughout the Alsea Valley. She resided in Benton County for 59 years. Mrs. Hayden was born in Woodford County, Kentucky, February 28, 1826. She moved with her parents to Missouri and was married in that state in 1843 to Thomas Cofer Hayden. In 1853 they crossed the plains to Oregon. They spent the first Winter near Albany and the following Summer located in the Alsea Valley, where they resided until death. Mr. Hayden died in 1893. Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hayden, eight of whom survive them. Mrs. Hayden leaves 12 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The living children are Mrs. Ann Howell, of Yachats; Mrs. Lizzie Mason, of Alsea; Mrs. Martha Slate, of Alsea; Marion Hayden, of Alsea; Mrs. W. R. Ryder, of Corvallis; Mrs. E. K. Ryder, of Corvallis; Mrs. Edward Denton, of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. T. J. Risley, of Albany.
