Martha Ann (Huggard) Wiles Nov. 14, 1895; Oregonian, p 3 "An Oregon Pioneer" Corvallis, Or., Nov. 13 The funeral of Martha Ann Wiles, an Oregon pioneer of 1843, occurred in this city this morning. The Presbyterian church, in which the services were held, was filled with friends of the deceased. A profusion of floral tributes testified to the universal esteem in which the deceased was held. All business houses of the city were closed from 10 to 11 o'clock out of respect for the deceased. She was buried in the Locke cemetery. Mrs. Wiles was the daughter of Joseph T. Huggard, and was born in Callaway county, Mo., May 13, 1833, in which state she resided until 1845. In this year, with her parents, she crossed the plains and settled near Philomath, in this county. Soon after coming to Oregon her mother died, leaving her, a girl of 13, with the care of a family of five children. To add to her cares, her sister died, leaving two small children, which she reared up to the time of her marriage with John Wiles, June 8, 1851. At that time the family was living at Wells, in the north end of Benton county, and here she continued to reside until 1885, when she moved to Corvallis. She left a husband and five children, Mrs. W. A. Wells, W. T. Wiles and Lucy G. Wiles, of Corvallis; Mrs. Thomas Kirkpatrick, of San Francisco, Cal., and E. F. Wiles, of Wells, Benton county.
