Martha Jane (Robinett) Yates April 14, 1918; Oregonian, p 8 (photo) "Pioneer of 1847 Passes" Corvallis, Or., April 13 Mrs. Martha Jane Yates, who crossed the plains to Oregon 71 years ago, died at her home in this city last night. She was born in Platt County, Missouri, November 2, 1837, and at the time of her passing was 80 years of age. At the age of 9 years she crossed the plains with her parents, William and Hanna Robinett, and at times it was necessary for her to take her turn in driving the ox team across the country. She was married to Joseph Yates, January 24, 1856, and moved with her husband to a farm near Halsey. In the Fall of 1869 Mr. and Mrs. Yates located on a farm three miles east of Corvallis, where they reared their family. Twenty years ago they retired from their farm and moved to Corvallis, where they have since made their home. Mrs. Yates was the mother of five children, William E. Yates, of Vancouver, Wash.; Calvin W. Yates, of Oakville, Linn County; Walter E. Yates, of Albany; J. F. Yates, of Corvallis, and Mrs. J. H. McConnell, of Shedds. Her going was the first break in the family circle. All her children and husband, commonly known as "Uncle Joe," were with her at the end. Eleven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren survive her. Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist Episcopal Church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock.
