Nelson Hoyt Feb. 11, 1902; Oregonian, p 10 (photo) "Funeral of Nelson Hoyt, Oregon Pioneer of 1847, and Ex-Member of the State Legislature" St. Helens, Or., Feb. 10 The funeral of Nelson Hoyt, an Oregon pioneer of 1847, a member of the Legislature from Columbia County in early days, and among those who took a prominent part in the Cayuse Indian war, occurred here today. Mr. Hoyt died at Astoria, Saturday night, where he had made his home for some time. The funeral services were conducted by St. Helens Lodge, No. 32, A.F. & A.M., of which he was the oldest member. Interment was in the German Hill cemetery, where Mrs. Hoyt is buried. Mr. Hoyt was born in Connecticut, April, 1822. When a young man he went to Indiana, where he married Miss Mary Rogers. In 1847 he started for Oregon with his wife and father-in-law, making the trip across the plains in a prairie schooner. After reaching a place near The Dalles the party was robbed of all their possessions by Indians, but they continued to Scappoose Bay, Columbia County, where they settled. The fruits of this union were eight children, those surviving being Margaret Pickering, of Portland; Sarah J. Stephenson, of Los Angeles; Anna McComas, of Mesa, Ariz.; Frank M. Hoyt, of Warren, Columbia County, and Olive Winton, of this city. Mrs. Hoyt died in Astoria in 1886.
