Sarah A. Spencer May 18, 1932; Oregonian, p 13 (photo) Mrs. Sarah A. Spencer, a pioneer of the upper Nehalem valley, died yesterday in Vernonia on her 82d birthday. The following children survive: Oral G. Faulkner, Margaret L. Throop, Robert L. Spencer and Omar C. Spencer. Mrs. Spencer was born in Cedar county, Missouri, and came to the northwest in 1870. In 1880 she and her husband, Israel P. Spencer, took up a homestead on what is now the site of Vernonia. Mr. Spencer died some time ago. Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. tomorrow at the Evangelical church at Vernonia. Interment will be in the Vernonia cemetery. May 19, 1932; Oregonian, p 23 "Vernonia Pioneer Dead" Vernonia, Or., May 18 Mrs. Sarah S. Spencer, Nehalem valley pioneer and mother of Omar C. Spencer, Portland attorney, died yesterday on her 82d birthday. She suffered a stroke of paralysis shortly after returning from a trip to Portland May 12 and never regained consciousness. She was born in Cedar county, Missouri, May 17, 1850. Her first husband was Martin Gillihan, with whom she came to Oregon in 1870 and settled on Sauvies island, afterward moving to Clark county, Washington. One child was born, Mrs. Bertha Malmsten, who died a year ago at Seaside. Mr. Gillihan died in 1872. June 3, 1880, Mrs. Gillihan married Israel Spencer and moved to a farm near Vernonia, where she had resided ever since. Mr. Spencer died November 8, 1922. She was a member of the Woman's Relief corps, the Rebekahs and the Evangelical church. Services will be held Thursday at 1 o'clock in the Evangelical church here. Surviving besides Omar C. Spencer are two daughters, Mrs. Oral G. Faulkner of Portland and Mrs. Margaret Throop of Vernonia, and a son, Robert L. Spencer of Vernonia.
