Judson Weed May 11, 1929; Oregonian, p 16 (photo) "Judson Weed, 83, Dies" Vernonia, Or., May 10 Judson Weed, 83, prominent in the life of Oregon for more than half a century, died here today. He was a native of Jackson county, Ohio, but was able to trace his ancestry 35 generations to King Egbert of England. As a descendant of Thomas Tracy, one of the founders of Norwich, Conn., he was a member of the society of founders of that city. Mr. Weed joined company I, 173d Ohio infantry, in April, 1864, for service in the civil war. In 1875 he arrived in Portland and the next year took a homestead, the second in Vernonia. He married Miss Emma Van Blaricom, niece of Joseph Van Blaricom, the first homesteader in this district. Besides being elected first school superintendent for Columbia county, M. Weed also had the distinction of being the second teacher in the Vernonia school. He was elected county assessor in 1888; served two terms in the legislature, 1889-93; was county clerk, 1894, and served eight years as county commissioner from 1914. That his son might attend college, the family lived in Philomath eight years. Surviving him, besides his widow and son, Oscar G. Wee, sheriff of Columbia county, are daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Grant of Dallas, Tex., Mrs. R. E. Kaufmann of Los Angeles, Cal., and Mrs. Lester Garney of Vernonia; brothers, Luther and Calvin Weed of Jackson, O., and Orren Weed of Anderson, Mo., and nine grandchildren. Funeral services pend word from relatives. May 13, 1929; Oregonian, p 20 Vernonia, Or., May 12 Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 P.M. in the Evangelical church for Judson Weed who died Friday morning at the age of 83 years. Mr. Weed, who was often referred to as the "Grand Old Man of the Nehalem," attended a dinner April 14 which was given in honor of his 83d birthday by the Women's Relief corps of Vernonia. A week ago last Wednesday he was present at the funeral of Mrs. Ellen Mills, mother of Guy R. Mills, mayor of Vernonia and another pioneer of the Nehalem. Two days later he was taken ill and died a week later. Rev. G. W. Plumer will officiate at the funeral.
