Capt. Charles Shriner Miller Aug. 15, 1909; Oregonian, p 7 (photo) "Built First Stamp Mill in Grant County" Sumpter, Or., Aug. 14 The late Captain Charles Shriner Miller was buried in Granite, near this place, Tuesday. He was a pioneer of 1848, having crossed the plains with his parents from Indiana, where he was born in 1835. His parents settled in Oregon City, and at the early age of 21 he embarked in the merchandise business at The Dalles, being associated with the firm of Block & Miller. This was one of the largest mercantile concerns in the Inland Empire during the placer mining days, supplying Canyon City, Auburn, Boise Basin, and the other rich camps of those days. From the merchandise business, Mr. Miller went to mining, first at Silver City, Idaho, and from there he came to Granite, Grant County, where he opened the Monumental mine, and in 1879 built the stamp mill now standing on that property. This was the first stamp mill built in Eastern Oregon. The machinery was hauled over the mountains from the old Umatilla landing on the Columbia River on wagons, a distance of 130 miles.
