Simpson S. Copple Feb. 16, 1933; Oregonian, p 14 "Civil War Veteran Dies" Hood River, Or., Feb. 15 Funeral services for Simpson S. Copple, 90, one of the two remaining veterans in this county of the civil war, were held today. Hood River post, American Legion, and Sons of Veterans were in charge of the military ritual at the graveside at Idlewilde cemetery. Surviving members of the family are: daughters, Mrs. Bertha Taylor, Portland; Mrs. Cora L. Morton, Bandon; Mrs. Edith Kepler, Oakland, Cal, and Mrs. Lillins B. Fisher, Portland. Sons, Hugh W. Copple, Lewiston, Idaho; Claude E. Copple, Odell; Robert A. Copple, Los Angeles, Cal. Mr. Copple came to Hood River 50 years ago. August 16, 1861, he enlisted from Marion county, Illinois, to serve during the civil war, becoming a member of company C, 11th regiment, Illinois volunteer infantry. With his command, Mr. Copple saw active service in several of the major engagements, and was wounded in the battle of Shiloh. He received honorable discharge at Vicksburg in 1864. Mr. Copple died at his home on Montello avenue Sunday night, just a month after the death of his wife.
