   John Howell, an Oregon pioneer who crossed the plalins in 1853, died here yesterday at the age of 81. Born in Illinois in 1835 he came to California with the early gold rush and settled at Yreka, where he mined until 1856, when he came to Williamsburg, Or., He made his home at that place for many years, removing to Grants Pass about ten years ago. He leaves a widow and eight children.
