Mary J. Sutton "Pioneer Woman is Dead" Klamath Falls, Or., Feb. 11 After living in Oregon for nearly half a century, Mrs. Mary J. Sutton, mother of the wife of George Chastain, ex-County Clerk and now Deputy County Clerk has passed away at the Chastain home here. Mrs. Sutton, nee Shook, was born in Ripley, Ind., moving to Iowa in 1847 and to Oregon in 1864. The family on coming to Oregon settled in Jacksonville, where in 1867 Miss Shook married James Sutton, first editor of the Jacksonville Post. Some years after the Suttons moved to Ashland, where, in 1871 Mr. Sutton started the Ashland tidings, a periodical which is still conducted in that city. He died in 1878 and in the Winter of 1880 the widow came to Klamath County, acquiring a ranch near Bonanza, later making her home with her brothers, who are prominent ranchers in this county.
