Gilbert L. King Aug. 6, 1932; Oregonian, p 18 "Honored Ontarian Dies" Ontario, OR., Aug. 5 Death claimed Ontario's "first citizen" yesterday, Judge G. L. King, 84. He had lived here for 48 years, taking a most prominent part in the growth of the city. He was the man who cleared the townsite of the city, built the first house in it, was its first station agent, helped build the first church, developed one of its first frames, helped organize the Owyhee ditch, served a secretary of the Owyhee Ditch company for 40 years, served in the state legislature, was justice of the peace for 30 years and helped organize the Masonic lodge. Judge King was born in New York, but spent his childhood inn Wisconsin. He served in the civil war, making the famous march to the sea, with Sherman. His first wife died in 1913, after which he married a childhood sweetheart, Mrs. Edna Gaylord, who died in 1927. He is survived by five of his six children, one son, Ira, having died this January. The others are Edward L., Arthur S. and Homer g. of Ontario; Mrs. Edna Arnold of Portland and Mrs. Alice Huston of Ukiah.
