David C. Ely Aug. 2, 1911; Oregonian, p 6 (photo) "Old Resident of Morrow County Dies in Ione at Age of Seventy-Seven" Heppner, Or., Aug. 1 D. C. Ely, a pioneer of Morrow County, who died at his home in Ione, July 29, was born in Pennsylvania in 1834. He was a teacher before the Civil War. He was mustered into the service of the United States in June, 1861. After three years of service in the Union Army as sergeant and quartermaster, he was discharged on account of ill health, but later re-enlisted. Mr. Ely married twice, and is survived by four sons and two daughters. He came to Morrow County 25 years ago and was prominent in local politics in the early days of the county. He afterward removed to Washington, where he lived for several years, and while there served a term as County Auditor, but returned to Oregon. He was sergeant-at-arms of the House of Representatives of the Oregon Legislature during the last two sessions.
