Lester was the son of Patrick & Margaret Koonts Ray. He married Sarah Elizabeth Hopkins on Dec 9, 1848 in Lodi, Columbia, Wisconsin. They were blessed with 9 children: Margaret, Amelia (Millie), Charles, Ella, Nancy, Lester, Frank, Julia & Robert Ray.
Lester enlisted in the 2nd Kansas Regiment in May 1861, serving 5 months, when he became disabled in the battle of Wilson River. General Lion, who was the head of his regiment, was killed in the same battle.
