Edward Berland May 9, 1929; Oregonian, p 16 "Death Wins Long Race" Enterprise, Or., May 8 Edward Berland, prominent cattleman of this city, died this morning on the trail from his cattle ranch on the lower Imnaha to the nearest wagon road at Imnaha bridge. He had been stricken some days previously with an ailment believed to have been poisoning from eating canned fruit or vegetables. A 12-mile trip on horseback is necessary in order to get from the ranch here. Early today it was decided to try to get him to this town to the hospital and 16 cowboys started on the long tedious trail up through the box canyon of the Imnaha, taking turns carrying their comrade on a stretcher, but death won the race. Before going into the cattle business Mr. Berland for years conducted a harness shop and leather store in Joseph, selling out some years ago and moving here. Besides his widow and two sons, Kelsay and Joseph, he is survived by his father, L. Berland, pioneer merchant of Enterprise; four sisters, Mrs. Louisa Day and Mrs. Emily Wilson of Enterprise; Mrs. Pennie Quick and Mrs. Cora Camber of Portland and two brothers, Oscar of Paradise and Bert of Brady, Mont. Mr. Berland had been a life-long member of the Knights of Pythias.
