Philip McFarland Oct. 8, 1921; Oregonian, p 22 Obituary --- Philip McFarland Enterprise, Or., Oct. 7 Philip McFarland, leader of the Nezperce Indians, died Tuesday afternoon at the Wallowa county fair grounds. With about 30 members of his tribe he had come to his native hills to visit old scenes and enjoy the fair. His body will be buried on Captain John creek, on the Idaho side of Snake river, about 23 miles above Lewiston, besides his father and mother. Chief Philip had been a frequent visitor in Wallowa county. He was here in the early summer with a party of Nezperce Indians to locate the old Indian burial grounds, which are to be set aside by the government as sacred to the Redmen. He was born in 1848. His father died 17 years ago. Oct. 8, 1921; Oregonian, p 6 "Indian Chief's Burial Today" Enterprise, Or., Oct. 7 Plans for the funeral of Philip McFarland, chief of the Nez Perce Indians, who died Tuesday, were changed after the arrival of his daughter, Mrs. Nora Harrison of Lapwai, Idaho, and Francis McFarland of Kamiah, Idaho. The chief will be buried tomorrow morning at the foot of Wallowa lake, where two sons are buried. The funeral will be attended by Philip's Nez Perce Indians and a large gathering of whites who knew the old chief. He died after a four-days' illness.
