Wheeler County, Oregon was officially established on February 17, 1899, carved from portions of Crook, Gilliam, and Grant counties. Named after Henry H. Wheeler, a prominent settler and stagecoach operator, the county occupies a rugged stretch of north-central Oregon known for its dramatic landscapes and fossil-rich terrain. Early settlers arrived in the mid-1800s, drawn by fertile valleys and opportunities in wheat farming and livestock ranching.
