Wheeler County, Oregon

Wheeler County, Oregon was officially established on February 17, 1899, carved from portions of Crook, Gilliam, and Grant counties. Named after Henry H. Wheeler, a prominent settler and stagecoach operator, the county occupies a rugged stretch of north-central Oregon known for its dramatic landscapes and fossil-rich terrain. Early settlers arrived in the mid-1800s, drawn by fertile valleys and opportunities in wheat farming and livestock ranching. The county seat, Fossil, reflects this legacy—home to historic cemeteries, pioneer records, and geological wonders that preserve both natural and human history.
