William Harvey Gates May 10, 1925; Oregonian, p 20 William Harvey Gates, 87 years old, Indian war veteran and pioneer, died at the home of his son, George Gates, near Spray, Or., April 26, following a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Gates was born in Ohio in 1838. He crossed the plains with his parents in 1852 and settled at Cascade Locks, later moving to The Dalles. He was the oldest son of Colonel N. H. Gates, who was one of the founders of The Dalles. In 1864 he married Miss Mary Koontz, who died in 1907. They had three sons, Charles, John and George, the latter two now living near Spray. Mr. Gates was buried in the family plot near his home.
